1990 Ponsot Chapelle Chambertin

Burgundy is like poetry. Unlike Bordeaux (history), or Rhone (philosophy), it is probably impossible to assign an objective grade, especially at this quality level. Did anyone attempt to grade Walt Whitman's poems?

This is a singular, unique, and utterly compelling wine of incredible character. It is 18 years old, but tastes vibrant and fruity and will live at least 20 more years. After being opened for 3 hours, it is still improving. Now there's fresh squeezed cherry juice, pine needles, black truffle, and bright acids, like an orange zest. While it has amazing complexity, it is smooth and easy to drink. I have 2 more bottles, and am seriously tempted to go open another. I'm just now getting to know it. Every sip is an adventure. I paid $250 per bottle at auction. Retail is $600.
