2001 Feudi di San Gregorio Serpico
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Wednesday, April 2, 2008
This is a massive, dark, inky wine. Delicious aromas of dark, dripping fruits, dark chocolate and something like tar. Then tons of tannins. My mouth has fur all over. Huge finish, but mostly hidden fruit. There's glimpses of boysenberry, and dirty forest. It is way too young, but very powerful and ageable. It should all come together with at least 5 years in an proper wine cellar. The potential is there. If you are going to open this now, decant at least 2 hours in advance. We drank with a pizza. Retail $75.

So it's not a taste per se, but a smell JS12. Next time you pave your driveway, take a bottle of this with you :).

Not exactly. It was something in the aroma, like freshly poured blacktop on a hot day. It was not a fault- it added some nice complexity.

Mike -What does "tar" taste like? Does that mean "heat"?

Michael Zimberg has intuition when it comes to wine. Somehow, some way, he is able to spot the best deals and the best food and wine pairings. Mikey's wife, Jill, attributes it to a naturally well-defined sense of taste and smell, combined with a healthy dose of experience. Whatever it is, his reviews shouldn't be missed.
