2001 Perticaia Sagrantino di Montefalco

Tonight I traveled to Umbria (at least in my mind, drinking this monster). This wine is a juicy, jammy, fruit driven, large scaled beast, that comes across as a cross like an especially tannic Amarone. It is fun to drink, and worked perfectly with my Whole Foods braised beef in prune sauce. However, it lacks delicacy and finesse. It will be appreciated by those that love massive wine. While I am usually in that camp, this time, there's not enough to get me really excited. At this price I expect a little more finesse. Still, I am enjoying it, and am glad I have 2 more. Retail $35.

This wine is an interesting counter point to yesterday's lesson. Robert Parker rated this wine outstanding, and Tanzer liked it too. The goal is to find wine that you like, and learn to enjoy it more by thinking about it, comparing it to other wine, and reading what others have to say about it. Retail $32.
