2004 Les Pagodes de Cos
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Thursday, March 27, 2008
This is the second wine of the Cos d'Estournel, the superstar Bordeaux producer. It is made in the same style as the Grand Vin, from the same site, just from younger vines that will be incorporated into the first wine in several years. It is an inexpensive way to sample the house style. Given the lack of ripeness from the '04 vintage, it is tannic and tight. With coaxing, and a several hour decant, it turns into a good Bordeaux (think old world). There's no lush fruit or oak. Its got some nice mint, blackberry and some vegetal notes. I'm tasting with a big porterhouse steak, and it works. At this price point, it is a good value. Retail $25, while 2004 Cos d'Estournel is selling for $80.

Michael Zimberg has intuition when it comes to wine. Somehow, some way, he is able to spot the best deals and the best food and wine pairings. Mikey's wife, Jill, attributes it to a naturally well-defined sense of taste and smell, combined with a healthy dose of experience. Whatever it is, his reviews shouldn't be missed.
