2004 Quilceda Creek Red Wine
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Wednesday, April 30, 2008
The Red Wine is a second wine of Quilceda Creek. It is a blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot. First, it is delicious. Not of the quality of what would normally be a second wine, which is composed of the barrels that weren't up to snuff for the primary blends. It is strong and compelling. If it was a jazz musician, it would be Ornette Coleman, with his bombastic, abstract melodies. It is luxurious, with a core of ripe, wild, spicy, hairy blackberries, and a mass of tannins and acids. We drank with a rib eye steak and the fat of the meat paired perfectly. I purchased this wine from the Quilceda Creek mailing list for $40 (including shipping). As good as it is, the merlot and cabernet sauvignon are much better, albeit with a significant price premium. Current retail is between $60 and $80.

Michael Zimberg has intuition when it comes to wine. Somehow, some way, he is able to spot the best deals and the best food and wine pairings. Mikey's wife, Jill, attributes it to a naturally well-defined sense of taste and smell, combined with a healthy dose of experience. Whatever it is, his reviews shouldn't be missed.
