2004 Turley Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Tuesday, March 18, 2008
Pesenti is a historic vineyard, first planted in 1923, and Turley is a very consistent producer of this often jammy, one-dimensional grape. This is a good example of zinfandel from an excellent site made by a talented winemaker. It is a deep, dark, pretty ruby. The smells are interesting and compelling. There's something like nori (specifically the seaweed sheets used to wrap sushi rolls), eucalyptus, fresh mint, and an Alpine village. Flavors are strong and tannic, with woodsy stewed fruits, and a bracing powerful finish. Even though there's lots of strength, it wouldn't overpower most food (think bold flavors). Decant several hours prior to serving, or age in a cool dark place for up to 10 years. Since I am on the Turley mailing list, I paid $38. The current retail is $60. Even though it is on the upper price range of zinfandel, there's enough character to justify the cost.

So Mike, does your picture reflect your grade on the bottle - I think I noticed you smiling at an A and frowning at a C??

Never had it, I think it might be a bit pricey for a B to low A.

I think I would put this particular wine at a B .

Michael Zimberg has intuition when it comes to wine. Somehow, some way, he is able to spot the best deals and the best food and wine pairings. Mikey's wife, Jill, attributes it to a naturally well-defined sense of taste and smell, combined with a healthy dose of experience. Whatever it is, his reviews shouldn't be missed.

Yes, the picture gives an indication of how I feel about the wine (usually).rockstarlk - why only a B? I found the seaweed character strange, but overall it was a unique and easy to drink, bombastic wine. Are you comparing to other Turley wines? Other zins?
