2005 Artadi Vinas de Gain Rioja
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Tuesday, October 28, 2008
I've had many vintages of Artadi's Vinas de Gain, and all have been great. The '05 may be the most concentrated I've tried. It is deep, dark, sweet and full, but hiding for wont of a cellar snooze. There's a core of somewhat concealed ripe fruit mixed with spicy pepper, with some persistent smooth tannins. I'm pleased. Try some. The only downside is that the price is creeping up. I used to pay about $17 for Vinas de Gain. We had this with a spicy pasta, which wasn't an ideal choice. Still, it is versatile. Try with any meats, spicy Mexican, or Asian food. Retail $30.

Michael Zimberg has intuition when it comes to wine. Somehow, some way, he is able to spot the best deals and the best food and wine pairings. Mikey's wife, Jill, attributes it to a naturally well-defined sense of taste and smell, combined with a healthy dose of experience. Whatever it is, his reviews shouldn't be missed.
