2005 Boillot Beaune Epenottes
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Monday, March 17, 2008
Yet another outstanding 2005 red burgundy. This one has a lovely, velvet ruby color. Boisterous dark fruit aromas with some mushrooms cascade through my head. The wine tastes delicious. I get bright, sweet fruit, but with lots of original character, impeccable balance, and a 30+ second finish. In case you can not tell, I think all readers should buy as much 2005 burgundy as possible. They are drinking really well now, but I'm sure in about a year, they will close down and will emerge from their slumber in 5+ years later, as some of the best wines produced in burgundy in this lifetime. I am glad to have 2 more bottles of this wine in my cellar. I may need to buy more. Retail $48.

Thanks for the comments! pandaa58, why an A-? I'm comparing to other Beaune wine at a similar price point, and I thought it was rocking. To me, it was more like a higher end Volnay that would be 2 times the price.

I might be more inclined to say A-, but maybe I'm just a stickler.

Michael Zimberg has intuition when it comes to wine. Somehow, some way, he is able to spot the best deals and the best food and wine pairings. Mikey's wife, Jill, attributes it to a naturally well-defined sense of taste and smell, combined with a healthy dose of experience. Whatever it is, his reviews shouldn't be missed.

Hey Mike! I was comparing it most directly with a bottle I had recently - 2000 Dom des Perdrix Nuits St Georges 1er Cru (roughly same price range). I thought the balance and the oak on the Perdrix were just a bit better than the Boillot. Of course, it was darn close, that's why they both still get some version of A from me.
