2005 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon

Quilceda Creek is the top, cult producer of Washington State wine. Over the past few years, the incredible critics reviews, and low production, have led to a significant auction premium for their wine. The '05 Cabernet sells for $115 from the winery mailing list, and $220 at retail. Luckily I am in the mailing list. Even though $115 is a lot of money for a bottle of wine, this one actually feels like a value.

At first, the aromas are muted and the flavors quickly run into a massive wall of tannins. After about an hour in the decanter, it starts to strut its stuff. The wine is dark powerful like a superhero. I am in the best fresh food market in the world and buy some black cherries that explode with juice. There's wild blackberry, and classic cabernet green veggies. Amazing depth, length and persistence, and some of the purest fruit. F'ing awesome. Way too young but amazing. Drank with a Prime Rib from Keenes Steakhouse, which is a great pairing. If you are going to drink this in the next few years, I'd suggest pairing it with a fatty meat. Or age it for up to 20 years.
