Wildman's Grand Tour
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Wednesday, May 14, 2008
Wildman, one of the top importers in both depth and breadth, put on an outstanding tasting at the Tribeca rooftop. It was a classy event, in a lovely lofted space with outstanding city, river and New Jersey views. In addition to many excellent producers (I didn't sample 1/4th of the
wine in the room), they had carving stations, bread and cheese, fresh fruit and passed hours devours.
Olivier Leflaive
2006 Puligny Montrachet. Pale gold. Muted stone nose. Nicely crisp. Good way to start. Not yet released. Grade: B+.
2006 Meursault. Bigger nose but sharper palate. Needs more bottle age. Retail, $45. Grade: B+.
2006 Chassagne Montrachet. Clos Saint Marc 1st cru. Lovely green apple and flower notes. Big step up. Retail $75. Grade: A.
2006 Meursault Charmes 1st Cru. Not as charming as the Saint Marc. Stones and lavender. Long steely finish. Not yet released. Grade: A-.
2006 Corton Charlamagne palate searing and bigger and much younger than the others but clearly a heavy hitter and very well done. Not yet released. Grade: A.
Nicolas Potel
2006 Bourogne Cuvee Gerard Potel. Light and tart slightly underripe. Retail $20. Grade: B.
2006 Savigny les Beaune 1st cru Hauts Jarons. Pretty fresh fruit. Nice but showing 1 dimension. Step up. Not yet released. Grade: B+.
2006 Volnay VV. Wild strawberry with lots of acids. Not yet released. Grade: B+.
2006 Nuits St Georges VV. Darker and more serious. Much more tannic palate. Needs time. But good. Not yet released. Grade: B+.
2006 Echezeaux. Tight nose and even darker. Great mouth feel and super tannic but very well done. Favorite wine so far. Retail $120. Grade: A.
2006 Bonnes Mares. Clearer color. Messy palate of tannins like a mouth full of mud. But promise. Retail $160. Grade: A-.
2003 Clos de la Roche. Great velvet color. Explosive spicy cherry and huge finish. Retail $120. Grade: A-.
Paul Jaboulet
2005 Crozes Hermitage Mule Blanche. Compelling peaches minerals and stones. Excellent value. Very long and full. Retail $30. Grade: A.
2006 Condrieu. Smells like orange marmalade and apricots. Delicious. Long and full. Not yet released. Grade: A-.
2005 Hermitage Blanc Sterimberg. Chewy and ripe. Lush. Impressive finish. Bordering on must buy. Retail $50. Grade: A.
2006 Crozes Jalet Rouge. Strong tannic and acidic. Not yet released. Grade: B.
2005 Crozes Thalabert. Really shows the power of 05 vs 06. Nice spicy and long. Retail $35. Grade: B+.
2006 Chateauneuf de Pape Cedres Rouge. Nice voilets. Well done. Not yet released. Grade: A-.
2005 Cote Rotie les Jumelles. Nice peppery strength. Delicious. Retail $75. Grade: A.
2006 Hermitage la Petite Chapel. Tannic and closed. Will be nice someday. Not yet released. Grade: B+.

Michael Zimberg has intuition when it comes to wine. Somehow, some way, he is able to spot the best deals and the best food and wine pairings. Mikey's wife, Jill, attributes it to a naturally well-defined sense of taste and smell, combined with a healthy dose of experience. Whatever it is, his reviews shouldn't be missed.
