African Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews
Written By: Matthew Apsokardu on Tuesday, July 1, 2008
African wine is a bit of an anomaly. Despite the continent's large landmass, there are only a few select regions that could be considered important for wine production. And most of those regions are found in South Africa. But it is perhaps this understated participation that makes African wine so intriguing. For those individuals who feel as if they've explored Europe and California enough, Africa is an exotic alternative.
Africa is home of the Pinotage grape, but also utilizes Riesling, Trebbiano, Semillon, and Muscat (among others). Africa is also known for their district/ward method of measuring vineyards, which is reminiscent of the regional breakups of Europe. Since the lifting of Apartheid government, African wine has seen a resurgence and looks to become a legitimate player in the field of wine.
