Alsace

Region of the Week

Beloved by its fans and sadly a sort of terra incognita for everyone else, this region in Eastern France is home to some of the most user-friendly white wines around. And you can still find some truly delicious wines from the region at relatively reasonable prices. Trimbach, for example, is responsible for some of the most reliable wines the region has to offer, and the prices for their ordinary bottlings are more than fair. Their 2004 riesling and gewürztraminer, for example, are both less than $20, and both offer a level of flavor and nuance far beyond what their price tag seems to imply. And though the pinot blanc above is a wine very much worth your attention, it is for riesling that Alsace is most well-known. Dry, crisp, and totally unlike its sweet German counterpart, Alsatian riesling is a fabulous antidote to the sweet-wine doldrums, and a wonderful introduction to all that this region has to offer.
