1998 Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perriéres
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Wednesday, April 9, 2008
Readers know how much I love Roulot these days. This is certainly no exception. It is the first premier cru I've tried, and I can not wait to have more. There's such a distinction in these wines. This one is pale browning golden. There's flowers and funk, amazing aromatics, butter, lemon chiffon, orange peel, and impeccable balance. ...read more

Time For Brunello
Written By: Dylan York on Wednesday, April 9, 2008
There's no better way to begin an exploration of Tuscany than with Brunello.
Out of all the wines in Italy, Brunello di Montalcino holds a very special place in my heart. After studying southern Italy for the last two months, I have been looking forward to Tuscany because it is a great excuse to drink some of my favorite wines. Last night as soon as I finished my article on Campania, the lady and I went out for a...read more
2004 Quilceda Creek Red Wine
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Wednesday, April 30, 2008
The Red Wine is a second wine of Quilceda Creek. It is a blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot. First, it is delicious. Not of the quality of what would normally be a second wine, which is composed of the barrels that weren't up to snuff for the primary blends. It is strong and compelling. If it was a jazz musician, it would be Ornette...read more

The Birth of Tour de Vins
Written By: Dylan York on Wednesday, April 30, 2008
Dylan York continues his quest for island domination as he opens up his new business - Tour des Vins.
With the exception of a few restaurants on the island, most of the wine lists are pretty out-dated, half the words are misspelled, vintages are off and the staff knows nothing about wine. Hey, it's an island full of rum and beer drinkers, and for the locals, wine has no presence in their daily life or cuisine. However, tourists visit the...read more

2004 De Toren Fusion V
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Wednesday, April 23, 2008
This is a delicious Bordeaux style blend from South Africa. Lovely red ruby. Funky nose with some mushroom (a little out of place in a wine of this style but it works). There's pine and mint. Long and smooth with outstanding balance. Lovely, full mouth feel. Old world in style. Very smooth tannins. Well done. Nice sense of place too. I...read more

Bring on the Gout

Steak and Wine pairings so good, it's worth the risk!
When you live on a small island such as Grenada, you don't have access to a meat department filled with various cuts of beef. The supermarkets here carry USDA beef, but it is expensive as hell! For instance a small rib-eye will cost you up to $15 USD, but it looks limp and has little if any marble. I prefer cuts like flank, hanger, flat iron...read more

2001 Feudi di San Gregorio Serpico
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Wednesday, April 2, 2008
This is a massive, dark, inky wine. Delicious aromas of dark, dripping fruits, dark chocolate and something like tar. Then tons of tannins. My mouth has fur all over. Huge finish, but mostly hidden fruit. There's glimpses of boysenberry, and dirty forest. It is way too young, but very powerful and ageable. It should all come together...read more

1947 Latour A Pomerol
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Tuesday, April 8, 2008
Now this lived up to the hype, and then some. I have velvet curtains all around me. This is how Bordeaux should taste. Utterly flawless, with character, a fickle, changing and palate staining full-bodied huge, long, youthful finish. There's expensive cigar box, and some very complex flavors, but also quite primary stewed plums. Very dark. ...read more

Everyday Wines
Written By: Brian Freedman on Tuesday, April 8, 2008
Don't let high-end obsession blind you to good, inexpensive wine!
One of the biggest misconceptions about wine lovers is that they prefer complex, so-called serious wines at the expense of all others. That those who have the most well-stocked cellars or access to the rarest old wines will open up those bottles whenever they have the chance. That they will turn their noses up at simpler, less expensive bottles...read more

2006 Turley Old Vines Zinfandel
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Tuesday, April 29, 2008
Turley makes some of the most distinctive zinfandel. If you are a zin lover, it is worth signing up for their mailing list (http://www.turleywinecellars.com/). As with many of the top California wines, this wine sells for considerably more on the secondary market than from the vineyard direct. This bottle was $27 from their mailing list,...read more
