Napa Valley
Written By: Brian Freedman on Wednesday, March 5, 2008
Region of the Week: March 3, 2008
Napa Valley, like Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Chianti, is equally recognizable to both wine connoisseurs and neophytes alike. And it's a reputation that is well-deserved: Few places in the world are as perfectly suited to the cultivation of cabernet sauvignon as this Valley north of San Francisco. But don't think of the Valley as a monolith: It's...read more
Wines That I Miss: Tres Sabores
Written By: Dylan York on Wednesday, March 5, 2008
Absence makes the heart grow fonder for Tres Sabores.
Today I was thinking about some of the wines that I wish were available on the island and one in particular popped into my head. Before I got to the island I took a quick trip to Napa Valley to visit a few of my favorite wineries. One of my stops included my friend Julie Johnson's winery, Tres Sabores. It is a fantastic boutique winery on the...read more

1996 Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Wednesday, March 26, 2008
Drank from a magnum. Pale clear golden with a thin thread of composed bubbles. This is stunning, long, and strong, with lemons, well balanced acids, brioche, toast and hazelnuts. Just great and very long. This cuvee is often oustanding. My favorite champagne is the '75 Sir Winston Churchill, tasted from a magnum. 1996 is a really...read more
Egg Time!
Written By: Romany Reagan on Wednesday, March 26, 2008
Nothing calls for Champagne like an Easter egg hunt.
"Dear, we have 650 eggs." "I know, Darling, what ever will we do?" Ahh childhood memories... Around every holiday people turn into kids again, at least I know I do. Are you scrambling around your shrubbery looking for breakfast? Chances are you're channeling your inner five year old (and I pray it's Easter morning). Few holidays make me...read more
2006 Domaine Clape Le Vin des Amis
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Wednesday, March 19, 2008
I am quite happy with this wine. It is an outstanding example of an old world style syrah from the Rhone, made by a top producer, for a reasonable price. It is a luxurious purple. It smells like cracked pepper laced plums, and tastes like a delicious blend of minerals, and spiced, black fruits, with outstanding length and breadth. We drank with...read more

2003 Meo Camuzet Vosne Romanee Aux Brulees
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Wednesday, March 19, 2008
Tried this blind. Smells really unbelievable, and very ripe. At first I guess it is a syrah. Then someone says Dujac. There's a saline nose, like the ocean. Someone else says Meo (right), then '03 (also right). Black pepper, tannic and wild, savage, rustic vibrant fruit. Very long finish (30+ seconds). New world style pinot. Delicious. ...read more

The Art of Doing Nothing -- Blueprint for the Perfect Sloth Day.
There can come a point when you need a vacation from your vacation. As lovely and relaxing two weeks away from work can seem, there can be an enormous amount of running around and running ragged involved in having a good time. Whole days spent and oceans of energy consumed in the quest for PLEASURE/MEANING MAXIMIZATION. This is doubly so...read more

2001 Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1st Cru Les Baudines
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Tuesday, March 25, 2008
Simple nose of peaches and apples. Nice full body, but plain Jane, this wine is a simpleton. There's very good balance. It plays second fiddle, even to the excellent bread at Country (in NYC). Not inspired. Not available at retail, probably about $80 at auction.

2004 Turley Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Tuesday, March 18, 2008
Pesenti is a historic vineyard, first planted in 1923, and Turley is a very consistent producer of this often jammy, one-dimensional grape. This is a good example of zinfandel from an excellent site made by a talented winemaker. It is a deep, dark, pretty ruby. The smells are interesting and compelling. There's something like nori (specifically...read more
