Tasting at Wildman: The Monika Caha Selections

This Wildman tasting was held at Landmarc in the Time Warner Center. There were so many excellent producers. Monika Caha's selections were of obvious high quality, and and were impressive as a group. She has an obvious infectious passion for her wine. She wanted me to try everything but I only had time to try Donabaum. These had a...read more

Breaking Down the Cost, Part II

The second installment of Kasey Carpenter's innovative look at the price of doing business in the wine world.

Recently ( Read Part I ), we considered the basic costs of the "fun part" of the bottle of wine; in fact, we only really discussed the stuff you see, the tangibles, which came to $15.36. And of course we all know there are other things there, and this week we will have to wave the white flag and address those less sexy components of...read more

2003 Vincent Girardin Corton Vielles Vignes Grand Cru

Huge sappy nose. Animal and dirty fruits with excellent but unresolved tannins. Next sip brings bright cherry and other dark red fruits. Needs time, but excellent value. With steamed shrimp and broccoli. Mikey's Grade

"Mikey's Grade" is a trademark of independent wine reviewer Michael Zimberg, and does not represent the views or opinions...read more

Cooking with Wine

Tips and advice on integrating wine into your everyday cooking.

Wine: What are the rules for cooking with it? Well, for one thing, never use the stuff labeled as "cooking wine." That stuff's crap--it's cheap wine, it's salty, and it's expensive. When you cook with wine, you concentrate the wine's flavors, so why would you want to concentrate "cooking wine?" The rules for cooking wine are that it...read more

A Toast to Graduates (Pop the Champagne)

A look back for those who have graduated, and a look ahead for those who are about to.

Ahh... June. Summer time. Birds are chirping, mowers are humming, skirts are shrinking and everywhere college kids are graduating. Yeah, June is good. On sunny, lazy days like these I get all nostalgic thinking about my own graduation day. My mom and I had a champagne brunch in the morning of her signature Eggs Golden Rod (see my Easter...read more

2005 Anderson Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

Excellent smooth cabernet that is almost cult like in its fruit extraction. The difference between this and the really expensive cults (Harlan, Shafer, Colgin, Screaming Eagle) is the quality of the tannins. These are a little gritty but smooth and long. There's tell tale green pepper and fresh ripe plummy fruit. And it can (and probably...read more

Wine and Watch at the Speakeasy Cinema

Why hit the winebar after the movie, when you could bring the winebar to the movie

One thing I love about NYC is the BYOB. There are BYOB restaurants everywhere, but there is a little known other BYOB once a month, and that is BYOB Cinema. My friend and colleague Matt Kohn puts on Speakeasy Cinema one Monday a month at The Tank theatre on Church St. in Tribeca. (Incidentally the same theatre where, in July, yours truly...read more

The Chianti Chronicles: Part Tre

York reveals one of his favorite selections from Chianti Classico.

The region of Chianti Classico is located in the middle of the Chianti region between Florence and Siena and is the original vineyard site of the first wines of Chianti. It is surrounded by the seven other satellite regions of Colli Senesi, Colli Aretini, Rufina, Montalbano, Colli Fiorentini, Montespertoli and Colline Pisani. In 1996 the...read more

Wildman's Grand Tour

Wildman, one of the top importers in both depth and breadth, put on an outstanding tasting at the Tribeca rooftop. It was a classy event, in a lovely lofted space with outstanding city, river and New Jersey views. In addition to many excellent producers (I didn't sample 1/4th of the wine in the room), they had carving stations, bread and...read more

2002 Turley Petite Syrah Library Vineyard

Deep, dark and brooding. Explosive nose of winter and cedar. Smells like it'll be killer. Then at first it is, until the finish. Nothing but tannins. Hard to get past it, much more powerful than the pure fruit underneath. May shed over time. Still, Turley makes some amazing wines. Worth a try. With a burrito. Mikey's Grade

"Mikey's Grade"...read more
