Barolo Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews
Written By: Brian Freedman on Wednesday, July 12, 2006 Barolo is, according to its many passionate admirers, the greatest wine produced in Italy. Whether or not this is true, it cannot be denied that this Nebbiolo-based wine from the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont is every bit as delicious as the greatest wines of the world. It is generally a powerful red wine, with high alcohol levels, strong tannins, and deep flavors of roses, plums, and mushrooms, particularly the truffles for which Piedmont is also famous.
These are not wines for the timid, but they are perfectly suited to the American palate: Their richness and strength are balanced by a certain elegance that many other such full-bodied wines lack. The most famous producers are Pio Cesare, Bruno Giacosa, and Gaja, though there are some excellent less well-known producers of Barolo that are worth trying.
