2002 Rex Hill Pinot Southern Oregon

Complex nose of earth, mushrooms, and pine needles. Somewhat closed and austere. With more fruit would be great. It has all the other elements. Drink up- don't think this will improve. Maybe a bad bottle? Not enjoyable. Mikey's Grade

2004 Artadi Vinas de Gain

Rockin. Tastes expensive. Lovely velvet, graphite, mocha and cedar make up the very complex nose. Lush and expansive on the palate, with long, smooth tannins. Very well put together. I am a fan. Still needs more time. With my wife's salmon with spiced red wine. Mikey's Grade

2004 Pine Ridge Crimson Creek Merlot

Full, dark ruby. Lively, subdued pretty small berries and tell-tale leather. A pretty, more feminine style of Merlot. Lots of tannins and acid in on the finish, however, but integrated well. Not very Californian. Works well with a steak. Will improve with a few more years in the cellar. Mikey's Grade

1994 Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon

Amazing California Bordeaux style wine. Very youthful, much younger than 14 years, which shows promise for a very long life. The nose sucks me in with prunes, saddle leather, plums and a perfect pitch. Fine and nuanced, full but impeccably clean earthy body. Pure class. Excessively long, with a more than 1 minute finish. Just beautiful...read more

2005 DR II Cabernet Sauvignon

Dark ruby. Made in a fruit forward, accessible style. Teeth stainingly thick, lush and viscus. It is a tasty treat. There's dark chocolate, nicely integrated oak, ripe, smooth tannins, and and a 30+ second finish. Despite the fact that it tastes really good, and I keep drinking, it is somewhat one dimensional. It looses half a grade here. ...read more

2006 Susana Balbo Malbec

Beautiful dark velvet ruby. Captivating nose combines flowers slightly funky earth. Lush and fruity on entry then acids and tannins dominate. We drank this by itself, which made the tannins harsher. I can imagine that it would work (and pick up finishing steam) with grilled meats. Overall pretty tasty and could age. Retail $22. Mikey's...read more

2006 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Russian River

Lightly colored for a California pinot. Looks more a Burgundy. Muted aromas with some forrest floor. Fairly lean, astringent and under ripe (like I am sucking a lemon), although I get some pretty floral strawberries, raspberries and pomegranate. Solid, easy to drink wine, but not a good value. I would like this at under $20 per bottle, but in...read more

2005 J. Albin Pinot Noir Laurel Vineyard

Here's a pretty pinot for under $30, an increasing rarity. It is lightly colored, with compelling woodsy, spicy aromas. Then there's slightly green strawberries, portobella mushrooms and cherry cola wrapped into a medium bodied frame. There's some astringency in the finish but overall a very nice showing. Retail $25. This is another good...read more

1999 Conterno Fantino Sori Ginestra

Jill and I drank this at the last night at San Domenico in NY. After 20 years on Central Park South, they will be moving to a new, as yet undisclosed location. At first, the wine locks and plays with the priscuitto. There's game in the huge and complex finish.

I'm pictured with Piero, the excellent wine director.
Also there's notes of fresh...read more

2005 Williams Selyem Bucher Vineyard Pinot Noir

New world style, big pinot. Pretty dark ruby. Nose of the wild forest, and cherry juice. Full bodied and strong. Fresh pure ripe fruit palate with somewhat obvious alcohol and a very long finish. With cheese and crusty bread. Very tasty, but at this price that is to be expected. Retail 90. Mikey's Grade
