2005 Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin

Lighter ruby color. The nose is right. There's fresh cut mushroom, warm dirt and lively fruit. Lovely blue and black fruit palate. Jill gets bacon fat. High but well balanced acidity. Not in the same league as the Fourrier Gevery Chambertin we had last night, but still very nice. This would be an excellent introduction to red burgundy. ...read more

2005 Anton Bauer Wagram Pinot Noir

From Austria. The aromas have no fruit, but show a dirty, stinky side. This is the opposite of a California pinot. It is lightly colored, astringent, with a mineral drive. Due to the acids, it could almost work in place of a crisp white wine. Still, interesting pinot, especially at this price. Retail $18. Mikey's Grade

2006 Root: 1 Cabernet Sauvignon

Thick, syrupy and jammy, this has some decent cab flavor but is mostly an overripe, unbalanced mess of a wine. OK to quaff, not to contemplate. However, this is very inexpensive for cabernet sauvignon, which makes it a reasonable choice at this price. Retail $13. Mikey's Grade

2005 Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Vielle Vigne

This is a villages wine, the second lowest (behind the most generic bourgogne) classification. It transcends. It is a wine of class, breed, and subtlety. Compelling anise, cardamon, and forest pine aromas. Then silky smooth and somewhat shy on entry. Very long finish with a nice copper minerality. Fourrier is an excellent, still under the radar...read more

2005 Martinelli Pinot Noir Three Sisters Vineyard

Open, lively, full and dark. This is a burst of fresh fruit surrounded by mushrooms and pine trees. It has a strong, sweet attack, full body and a long, persistent finish. I like this more than the list Martinelli pinot I drank. Certainly a high quality pinot with guts and poise, but not a great value. Retail $70. Mikey's Grade

2003 Musella Amarone

Wow. A burst of syrupy fun. Deep, dark, thick and jammy, this is a delightfully rich wine. Like a thumping bass, it has an incredibly long resonance. Good raw, true raspberry. Jill says a big pow POW of bursting fruit, with interesting pine needles. Smells like a lot of alcohol. This is all power, and although a very good value, loses...read more

2004 Kongsgaard Chardonnay

Pale golden. Bright lemon and toasted brioche. Very long and full. Outstanding balance and sheer power. Sleek. Unbelievable full mouthfeel. Pure and sweet. Very expensive. But worth it. One of the top 4 California Chardonnay producers, along with Aubert, Kistler, and Marcassin. Mikey's Grade

2004 Dominio de Atauta Ribera del Duero Atalayas de Golban

Very dark and full. Outstanding concentration, structure and balance between dark, bursting fruits, tannins and acids. Would try to age a few more years- this would improve with complexity. Quite easy to drink now. Drank by itself, but would work with almost any food, except for the exceptionally mild. Mikey's Grade

2005 Fabrice Gasnier Chinon Cuvée les Graves

Expected cab franc gun flint, dark earthy fruits, smooth finish. Very dark and ripe for a Chinon. An outstanding value at $12. Pick up a case for every day drinking. Mikey's Grade

2004 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Beaux Bruns

Needed a long time to open up. After more than 2 hours, it is still improving. Seemed to hit its stride after almost 3 hours. Pure, wild, reticent dark fruits, Sweet cherry and cranberry. Lovely earthiness, and sappy pine towards the end of the finish. Everything is here, but needs many more years to come together. This is the first Barthod...read more
