Other Red Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews
Written By: Brian Freedman on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 Red wines run the gamut from wildly popular and easy-to-love California Merlot and Australian Shiraz to the more subtle Pinot Noirs of Burgundy. Indeed, the variety and range of red wines is nothing short of astounding, and it is possible to spend a lifetime tasting only red wines and still never experience them all.
Red wines are made from single grape varieties like the Cabernet Sauvignon of California, or blends of several varieties, like the red wines of Bordeaux, which are made of various combinations of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and possible a bit of Petit Verdot. Some red wines, like Sicily's Nero dAvola, are made in extremely warm regions, whereas others are produced in cooler parts of the world, like France's Burgundy, where Pinot Noir thrives. Indeed, the number of styles of red wine you can experience is limited only by your willingness to explore. And the rewards are greater than you would ever imagine.
