Piedmont

Region of the Week

Piedmont may not be as famous as Tuscany in terms of name-recognition among the general public, but in wine circles, mere mention of its name tends to result in a hushed, respectful silence. For this is where many people believe the best wines in Italy are from. (In fact, many people believe that the best wines of Piedmont can rival those from any of the world’s other great growing regions, like Bordeaux and Burgundy.) Located in the North West of the country, this is nebbiolo country, one of the great grape varieties of the world. And nowhere is nebbiolo grown with more flavor and finesse than in Barolo and Barbaresco. The former is often referred to as “the king of wines and the wine of kings.” And, indeed, there is something indisputably masculine about this rich, bold wine and its classic aromas and flavors of roses and tar. The queen of Italian wines, on the other hand, is Barbaresco, a softer, more fragrant wine that, though produced from the same grape, is usually far more elegant and approachable and simply sings with a certain fennel and flower note that is both irresistible to its fans and a siren-song for first-time tasters
