Pio Cesare 2005 Barbera d'Alba "Fides"
Written By: ClassicWines.com Team on Sunday, December 9, 2007 Wine of the Week
The English translation of the Latin word fides is 'trust,' which is exactly what Pio Cesare had in the land when they planted the more humble barbera grape on a vineyard that had, until then, been used for the more highly regarded and expensive nebbiolo. But in 1991 Cesare decided to take that leap of faith, and the results have been consistently stunning.
This 2005 is no different: Its relatively quiet nose of crushed red raspberries and milk chocolate leads the way to an exuberant (yet elegant) palate of riper red and black berries, superbly balanced acid and tannin, and a finish redolent of sweet wood, caramel, and toast. As usual, the Fides is one of the finest expressions of barbera you’re likely to come across.
