Region of the Week - Tuscany
Written By: ClassicWines.com Team on Wednesday, July 25, 2007
Tuscany is perhaps one of the most famous wine regions in the entire world. This is not only because of the quality of the wines produced there, or its history that goes back an unfathomably long time, but also because its wines run the gamut from pricey prestige bottlings (Brunello di Montalcino, for example) to tasty, approachable, inexpensive food-wines (Chianti, Rosso di Montalcino). Of course, this is not a monolithic region, and there is a fairly wide range of micro-climates and soil types here. And this is a very good thing indeed for wine lovers, since it means that there are any number of wines and wine styles to taste. The most famous, of course, are the region’s sangiovese-based reds, such as the aforementioned Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino, and Chianti, as well as Vino Nobile di Montipulciano, which rounds out the big four. But then there are the so-called Super-Tuscans, which are blends produced from grapes that do not adhere to the regions DOC guidelines hence the IGT on the label), often utilize international varieties, and are, despite their supposedly “inferior” grading, some of the finest in the world. Among those, Luce keeps company with the likes of Sassicaia and Ornellaia, some of the most sought-after wines in Italy…and, indeed, the planet.
