Riesling Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews
Written By: Brian Freedman on Wednesday, July 12, 2006 Riesling is the most famous grape variety in Germany. It produces wine than ranges from dry to extremely sweet, and covers all bases in between. The one constant is that the alcohol level in German Riesling is reliably low, a trait that has either boosted or diminished its popularity, depending on the prevailing popular tastes.
Riesling is made all over the world. It does particularly well in Alsace, where it is reliably dry and racy, as well as in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, California, Washington State, Oregon, and the Finger Lakes region of New York. However, Germany is its most famous home. Here, Riesling is vinified in a variety of styles, from the driest, called Kabinett, to the sweet and expensive botrytized Trockenbeerenauslese dessert wines that are considered some of the best sweet wines in the world.
