Rioja Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews
Written By: Brian Freedman on Monday, July 31, 2006 Rioja is the largest, most important, and most highly regarded wine region in Spain. It is located in the central zone of northeastern Spain, and as such, its climate is affected by both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. As a result, the wines of Rioja are generally well-balanced with both the lovely acids of cooler-weather wines and the concentration and power of those traditionally from warmer climates. Riojas are made primarily from two grapes, Tempranillo and Garnacha. Though the best ones can be rather pricy, there are some truly astounding values out there, and many bottles of Rioja, even the least expensive ones, are often charming, food-friendly, and easy to drink.
