Sauternes Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews
Written By: Brian Freedman on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 Considered by many to be the greatest dessert wine in the world, Sauternes are made in the Bordeaux region of France from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes that have, if the weather is just right, been infected by the fungus Botrytis Cinerea, or Noble Rot. This fungus causes the grapes to shrivel, concentrating their juices and imparting to them a flavor that many people describe as flowery or honey-like. The best ones, like the legendary Chateau d'Yquem, can age for many decades before they reach their peak. Because of the way in which Sauternes is produced, it tends to be on the pricey side, but one sip will show you that it's more than worth it. There is, quite simply, no other flavor like it in the world of wine.
