Shiraz / Syrah Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews

In France, Syrah is the classic variety of the Rhone region, in the south of which it is blended with Grenache and Mourvedre and in the north of which it is the primary variety in the famed and highly respected wines of, among other appellations, Crozes-Hermitage. In its Old World incarnation, younger Syrah is generally rich and spicy, but as it ages, darker fruit flavors develop.

In the New World, the variety has found a happy home is Australia, where it is called Shiraz. In Australia, it is planted more than any other red variety. As a result, the range in quality and style is rather large, but the best of them are complex, fruity, tannic, and nuanced. California has also seen an increase in the number of acres planted with this variety, and Rhone-style blends are growing in popularity among California vintners.
