A Bit of Personal History

Before we get too intimate, allow me to introduce myself.
Hello fellow oenophiles - welcome to my column! My name is Romany, I live in NYC & I like to drink wine. A lot. So right there we have something in common. It has been a rather crazy past few months for me, embarking on the world of wine took me out of the city to northern California, from Davis, to Napa, to San Francisco - & now back...read moreSyrah In My Closet: Start the Presses

Wine 101 - Pressing wine is a precise and crucial element of the wine making process. It's also a tough task for a single college winemaker to handle.
It took about a week and a half for the fermentation to come to a halt. My vat of purple pulp stopped bubbling carbon dioxide, signaling the time to proceed with pressing. Unfortunately, I was suffering a severe time crunch when this happened. My infant wine had to be neglected until I found some spare time the next weekend to nurture it...read moreTagged Under: Shiraz Syrah, UC Davis, Wine Making, Tannins, Pressing Wine, Must, Basket

Wine 101 - The Voice from the Classroom
Meet our new Academic Contributor - Michael Keba...There was a day about thirteen years ago when a noxious odor of rotten eggs radiated from the garage of our small suburban home in the outskirts of Los Angeles. The smell was sucked through the air conditioning so that a homogenous stench blanketed everything inside our house. The only thing...

Wine and the City Revamped!
Written By: Romany Reagan on Thursday, November 8, 2007
What, you might ask, would a devout urbanite like myself be doing stomping in my stilettos around the farms of central California? Well, our story begins on a dew-scented day on the lush sidewalks of Manhattan...
Meet our new Wine and the City columnist - Romany Reagan...I had moved to New York to pursue my acting career and was enjoying varying degrees of success. However as with all lives in art, we all need a day job - and cubicles have never been good for my soul's complexion. I began to realize acting was taking a backseat to said day job, my...

Wine 101 - Looking For My Big Break
Another fire raged through Malibu last weekend. While I watched from the comfort of my home, enormous airtankers dropped water bombs the size of swimming pools on the angry flames. Serious fires burn through southern California every few years, but this year has been particularly destructive. My heart goes out to all the families in Malibu,...read moreIntroduction to Viticulture

Wine 101 - Teenage Boys Discovered Wine?
So far in my writings, I've been talking an awful lot about my lack of knowledge and experience concerning wine. I still might be a newbie, but I like to think that I know a thing or two. I've been enrolled in a class this quarter called "Introduction to Viticulture" that I have yet to speak of. In light of my finals coming up, I figured...read moreTagged Under: Red Wines, White Wines, UC Davis, Viticulture

Wine 101 - Daily life of a Davis V&E Student
Last summer, I worked as an assistant in a small boutique wine store ten minutes away from my house. It was my first real experience in the wine industry, and even though I was only receiving shipments and stocking shelves (meticulously positioning thousands of bottles of wine), I got a good taste of how the retail end works. As a UC Davis...read moreWorking My Way Up

Wine 101 - Mo Money Mo Money
I am no longer unemployed! Yes, that is correct, I have a job. The process required was harder than I had originally imagined. I had to get in some people's faces, leave a steady stream of e-mails, visit many offices, and put myself in somewhat awkward situations. During this process, I utilized some advice from the successful entrepreneur...read moreTagged Under: UC Davis, Viticulture, Wine Research, Wine Jobs, Wine Student, Professors, Enology
