A Study in Second Growths
Written By: Kasey Carpenter on Wednesday, October 29, 2008
Even for a bad vintage, second growth can become lucrative.
We all know what 2007 was. It was a bad year. And I am not just talking about Bordeaux. That having been said, 2007 is not a dog per se, at least not according to those in the press who review such wines. Some wines that I think are of interest if not from an investment potential, then from a drink now and enjoy the discount perspective: For...read moreTagged Under: Buying Wines, Wine Auctions, Wine Investment, Second Growth, Bad Vintage, 2007

Sorry All of Our Wines Were Fake
Written By: Kasey Carpenter on Wednesday, June 4, 2008
What happens when half a million dollars worth of wine is proved fraudulent?
By now most of us have read about the Ponsot that was pulled from the Acker Merrall & Conditt auction back in April. Twenty-two lots of Ponsot that was estimated to be worth well north of half a million dollars was pulled during the auction at the request of Ponsot. It seems that some fakes were apparent in the line up. So they must have been...read moreTagged Under: Wine Auctions, Ponsot, Acker Merrall & Condit, Counterfeit Bottles

Another Tool Against Counterfeit?
Written By: Kasey Carpenter on Tuesday, September 9, 2008
X-Rays may help scientists in preventing counterfeiting of pricey wine bottles.
Scientists at the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) have successfully conducted tests that will accurately identify the age of a bottle of wine. By measuring the x-rays that bounce off a bottle which is placed under a beam of ions, they can read a unique "signature" for that bottle of wine. They will then use this data and...read moreQ2 Auction Results Prove My Theory

Burgundy is seeing some amazing returns at high end auction houses.
In the months of 2008, from April - June, $66 million dollars were spent on collectible wine in the US. Like I said, people who collect at this level aren't too worried about how much gas has gone up whether that gas is going into an S-Class, a Chris Craft, or a Gulfstream. Seriously though, 66 million? Wow. What I really loved about the...read moreTagged Under: Burgundy, Buying Wines, Wine Auctions, Acker Merrall & Condit, Wine Shopping, Zachys, Sotheby, B&B

And So It Begins - The Fight Against Fraud
Written By: Kasey Carpenter on Thursday, September 4, 2008
More and more wines are being proven fraudulent, robbing collectors of hundreds to thousands of dollars. Chemists have decided to step in and create a potential early warning system.
With all the talk of wine fraud these days, it is no wonder that many scientists have been applying themselves to the task of inventing a device that will detect fraudulent wines. Well here is today's latest iteration. As reported on by no less that the Royal Chemistry Society, Cecilia Jiménez-Jorquera from the Barcelona Institute of...read moreTagged Under: Wine Tasting, Wine Auctions, Wine Fraud, Electric Tongue, Royal Chemistry Society

Q3 Auction Results Are Mixed
Written By: Kasey Carpenter on Thursday, October 9, 2008
How is the turbulent economic status of the U.S. affecting wine auctions?
So remember way back in August when I reported on the Q2 auction results and how Burgundy was leading the field? Well Burgundy, my beloved, has made a liar of me. Wine has a way of biting the hand that holds the glass, usually via immoderate consumption. But wine can also bite your hand if you dare to write about it, let alone say anything...read moreTagged Under: Buying Wines, Wine Auctions, Q4

If You Want to OWN the 2005 Burgundy Market...

This could be a career making opportunity for wine investors.
...then you need to 1) book a flight to Hong Kong for November 15th, 2) get set up with AMC for absentee bidding, 3) plan a multi-state, multi-store heist whereby you rob, at gunpoint, what few stores have any 2005 Burgundy in stock. Option 3 is pretty much a dead end to a new group of federal friends and predatory bunkmates. Option 1, while...read moreTagged Under: Burgundy, China, Buying Wines, Wine Auctions, Acker Merrall & Condit, Hong Kong, Wine Investment

Rodenstock on the Run
Written By: Kasey Carpenter on Thursday, October 2, 2008
This case of bottle fraud is heating up.
Unless you have been living under a rock in the wine world, you no doubt are familiar with the infamous Jefferson bottles that are the subject of a best-selling book by author Benjamin Wallace, not one, but two movies in development, and some real life courtroom drama that Hollywood only wishes it could produce. Well the saga continues. One...read moreTagged Under: White Burgundy, Buying Wines, Wine Auctions, Wine Fraud, Rodenstock, Koch

How to Double Your Money with One Wine Investment

Want to make a load of loot without getting your hands dirty? This investment might be the answer.
I personally enjoy the hunt, the sourcing of the hard to get wines, the scouring of auction results, kicking myself for passing on lots, patting myself on the back when I make a smart buy. But there are some of you out there who aren't interested in the "dirty work" or perhaps, and I'd like to think this the prevailing reason, you simply...read moreTagged Under: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Buying Wines, Wine Auctions, Wine Investment
