Tasting at Wildman: The Monika Caha Selections
Written By: Michael Zimberg on Wednesday, May 7, 2008
This Wildman tasting was held at Landmarc in the Time Warner Center. There were so many excellent producers. Monika Caha's selections were of obvious high quality, and and were impressive as a group. She has an obvious infectious passion for her wine. She wanted me to try everything but I
only had time to try Donabaum. These had a saltiness and a refreshing acidity across the board. All are based on a short pour, so my notes are brief. I'd like to spend more time with these wines. Donabaum is clearly an Austrian winemaker to watch.
2006 Grüner Veltliner 'Johann' Federspiel. This is light and easy to drink. The finish is slightly hard and abrupt. It needs a bit of cellar time, and should improve. Retail $16, Grade: B.
2006 Grüner Veltliner 'Spitzer Point' Smaragd Much more nose with flavored oils, more density and complexity, and longer than the Johann. Retail $39. Grade: B+.
2006 Grüner Veltliner 'Berglave Loiben' Smaragd. Lighter color than the Spitzer Point. More pure fruit, Very refreshing and clean. Retail $39. Grade: A-.
2006 Grüner Veltliner 'Loibner Reserve'. Clearly some residual sugar (but not much). It is still on the dry, refreshing side. Long, full aftertaste. Retail $40. Grade: A-.
2006 Riesling 'Bergterrassen' Smaragd. Sharp minerality, lots of acids. One for the cellar, but good and tasty. This isn't currenty available at retail, but would be about $45. Grade: A-.
2006 Riesling 'Offenberg' Smaragd. Best nose of the lineup. Really lovely! Lots of depth, minerals, and stones. Very long finish. Tastes very expensive. Excellent value. Retail $38. Grade: A.
2006 Riesling 'Setzberg' Smaragd. More tropical nose of pineapple, mango, and litchi. Long, lovely and excellent finish. Retail $34. Grade: A.

Michael Zimberg has intuition when it comes to wine. Somehow, some way, he is able to spot the best deals and the best food and wine pairings. Mikey's wife, Jill, attributes it to a naturally well-defined sense of taste and smell, combined with a healthy dose of experience. Whatever it is, his reviews shouldn't be missed.
