Tempranillo Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews
Written By: Brian Freedman on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 Tempranillo most famously provides the backbone to Spain's Rioja, which is a blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha (and occasionally a bit of Mazuelo and Graciano). The grape itself is thick-skinned and early-maturing, and when Tempranillo is made into a varietal wines, it tends to be full-flavored and dark-colored but not highly alcoholic.
Tempranillo also does well in Argentina, but it is in Spain's Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, as well as certain parts of Penedès and Ribera del Duero, that it shines. This is partly due to the cooler climates of these regions, as well as a tradition of growing Tempranillo in them. It is also grown in some regions of Portugal, as well.
