Video Transcript: Have You Been To A Wine Tasting Room

Brian Freedman: Welcome to 'The Classic Wines Minute' brought to you by ClassicWines.com; I am your host Brian Freedman. And today, we are back on the North Fork of Long Island and today we are at Bedell Cellars, what a beautiful tasting room this is. It's very different from a number of the other tasting rooms you might expect around here, and a lot of that is because of the owner of Bedell Cellars, Michael Lynne, who is in-charge of New Line Cinema. What's amazing is, he's pumped a lot of money, a lot of enthusiasm into this, but at the same time he has respected the tradition and the heritage of the Long Island wine industry.

Now, Bedell is traditionally known for making some very, very fine merlots. What they are doing these days is really focusing on blending a lot of their grape varietals, which not only allows them to express the land differently but it also gives them a chance to really work with whatever mother nature gives them that year, they're not just married to one type of grape.

What else they're doing here is really pumping a lot of money into technology and innovation and it's changing the nature of the wines completely for the better. So let's check out the rest of the facility and see what else is happening here at Bedell.

So now we're in the cellar of Bedell Cellars and you'll notice behind me and beside me we have the fermenters. Now, what's interesting here is they have a number of different sizes when it comes to the tanks. The advantage of this is that it allows the winemaker to make a number of decisions that he wouldn't be able to otherwise. So if he wants to ferment a huge batch of it, great, no problem, but if there is a little patch of veneered that he thinks could be made into a reserve wine or something a little different he can actually put it in one of the smaller ones, huge advantage there.
