Video Transcript: Paumanok Winery

Brian Freedman: Welcome to the Classic Wines Minute, brought to you by ClassicWines.com, I am your host Brian Freedman and we are here on the North Fork of Long Island today at the beautiful Paumanok Vineyards and we are lucky enough to be joined by Kareem Massoud, Kareem thanks so much for joining us and his brother Nabil is up there shoveling sauvignon blanc grapes there into the crusher. So before we even get started, let’s actually talk about what is happening back there, you juts brought in the sauvignon blanc grapes today, so what is going on right now?

Kareem Massoud: Right now we are filling the press with as you said freshly harvested grapes, they haven’t been crushed or destemmed yet, so what we are doing we would call Whole Cluster Pressing and the idea here is we are trying to keep the juice as fresh as possible, once we begin to press that is going to be literally freshly squeezed grape juice.

Brian Freedman: So this is a family operation here, it is you, it’s your brother and your parents as well, they started this, correct?

Kareem Massoud: That is right they are actually, at the moment they are in Scotland on a well deserved vacation, but they are very much completely involved still, they are still fully involved, they were the founders in 1983 when we started our operation. We really should be called Massoud Family Vineyards, but that’s another story.

Brian Freedman: We will take it up with the Massouds when we are done filming.

Kareem Massoud: But we are really a family, a state winery.

Brian Freedman: And have you always played a role in what happens here?

Kareem Massoud: I have been here full-time for nine years and in that time, yeah more or less, really in the wine making I have been more actively involved since the 2001 Vintage -- I have another brother, there are three of us, both my brothers and I we grew up with it.

Brian Freedman: Kareem thanks so much for joining us.

Kareem Massoud: Thank you Brian, thank you.

Brian Freedman: For all of us here at ClassicWines.com, I am Brian Freedman. Cheers!
