2005 Chateau de Puligny-Montachet Monthelie

Burgundy can be one of the most confusing regions to decode. Here's a wine made by a producer called "Chateau de Puligny-Montrachet". Puligny-Montrachet is also the name of a town, but not the town where this wine is from! It is a Monthelie, which is a different town, just south of Volnay. Confused? I hope not. As the label states, it is a pinot noir, as are
almost all reds from burgundy (except those from Beaujalais). But most do not have the name of the grape. Now that the label has been explained, here are some thoughts on the wine. This is a wonderful, perfumed, deep dark red, with the essence of pinot noir. It packs a ripe flavor punch of fresh bing cherries, and forest floor. It is delicious, and, for those of you that want to try a red burgundy, a good place to start. It has a near ideal blend of fruit, acids, and tannins and a compelling nose, and a long finish. The price is excellent for wine of this quality. Burgundy can really be a crap shoot, where a $100 bottle can be mediocre, and this wine really delivers. Tasted Feb 26, 2008. Retail: $26.
