Abruzzo / Abruzzi Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews

Written By: Brian Freedman on Wed, Jul 12th 2006

This region extends from the mountains of central Italy to the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Within these limits, some of the most popular and affordable red wines in Italy are produced. The most famous one is the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, a varietal wine made from the grape of the same name. It is often darkly fruity with hints of pepper and spice, and best when it is young. There is simply nothing better with a big bowl of pasta and tomato sauce.

There are many producers from which lovers of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo can choose. The most well-known include Farnese and Santangelo, though the wines of Scarlata and Casal Bordino are reliably pleasant. Fortunately, the wines of this region are generally affordable enough to allow a great deal of exploration and tasting without necessitating too great an expenditure of money.
