Anderson Valley

Written By: Brian Freedman on Tue, Jun 26th 2007

Region of the Week: June 24, 2007

The Anderson Valley is one of the hidden gems of California. Its location, about 80 miles north of San Francisco, would seem to be perfect for grape-growing: The cool coastal weather is perfect for growing the grape varieties traditionally found in France's best sparklers: The pinot noir - chardonnay blend of the Scharffenberger Brut NV is evidence of that. And yet its southern neighbors - Napa and Sonoma in particularhave overshadowed this region for far too long. But as more Americans develop a taste for Champagne and discover the far more affordable domestic alternatives, the Anderson Valley should begin to show up on the wine-radars of more and more people. Gems in the rough, after all, cannot stay hidden forever.
