Apulia is a wine region in the heel of the Italian boot, deep in the southeastern part of the country. A great deal of wine is produced here, though precious little of it has made much of an impact in the world of classic wines. It's not that the wine produced in Apulia is bad - not at all - it's simply that the wines made in other parts of Italy tend to be a bit more appealing.
That having been said, however, Apulia has made one significant contribution to the world of wine in recent years: Primitivo. This grape variety, the same as California's title="zinfandel" href="http://www.classicwines.com/zinfandel-wine">Zinfandel but with a different name, produces wines with a high alcohol content, deeply fruity flavors, and surprising complexity. They are also reliably affordable. In fact, one of the best values in the world of wine today is the A-Mano Primitivo, an Apulian red wine that retails for less than $10 and has as much flavor as wines that cost three times as much.
