Located in South Australia, the Barossa Valley is one of the most important wine regions in all of Australia, which is arguably one of the most important wine-producing countries in the world today. Some of the most well-known producers of wine are located here, including the famous Penfold's, whose Grange has existed at the top of the Australian wine ladder for decades. And many believe that, in its concentration and power, it ranks among some of the finest wines in the world. And it has a price-tag to match.
Today, however, with the popularity of Shiraz - that jammy, spicy, exuberant example of classic Australian varietal wine - Barossa is just as well known as the major producer of wines for everyday drinking as it is for the high-end stuff. Still, the lure of Australia is that even its mediocre wines are generally quite nice, and the Barossa Valley is a perfect example of this. Indeed, even wines that are disparaged by wine professionals (Yellow Tail Shiraz, for example) are generally quite a bit better than the plonk that was popular a mere decade ago. Much of this shift is thanks to the magic of the Barossa Valley.
