Much has been made of Brunello di Montalcino lately, perhaps because of the surge in popularity the wine has experienced. And it’s no wonder why—the wines from this region are as deep, rich, and complex as they are anywhere in the world. In fact, many wine lovers prefer the pleasure of Brunello di Montalcino to any other wine in Italy, even the famed Piedmont nebbiolos. This region is located east of Florence, and the wines, by law, are produced from the sangiovese grape. They are often extremely long-lived. Producers to look for include Banfi, Caparzo, Altesino, and Frescobaldi, among others.
