Building a Wine Collection

Putting together a good collection of wine is an ongoing process, so the last thing you should do - even if you hit the lottery or otherwise come into money unexpectedly - is attempt to assemble one instantly. It is, indeed, a labor of love, and only after years of concerted effort - to both determine what you like and then find the bottles that fit your unique criteria - are you likely to find yourself in the possession of a collection that truly makes you proud.
The tendency, of course, is to just go for the big-name, big-price-tag bottles. And while there are certainly some wines out there that will both cost you a fortune and add to the happiness of your wine life, they are not the only ones. The most interesting collections, after all, are the ones that contain not just depth, but variety, too.
But before you think about starting a collection, taste as widely as possible: The wine world is a very big place, and if you close yourself off to all but those famous wines that investors and collectors clamor for, you will not put together a collection that's nearly as interesting as it otherwise could be.
