Cabernet Franc Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews

Written By: Brian Freedman on Wed, Jul 5th 2006

Cabernet Franc is one of the three main blending grapes in Bordeaux, which is often considered the worlds greatest wine (the other two blending grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with supporting roles played by Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Carmenere). Along with the white grape Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc is one of the parent varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cabernet Franc is often described as perfumed or aromatic, and is therefore valued primarily as a blending variety. It is, however, occasionally made into a varietal wine that, when done well, is quite pleasant, if lacking all the crown-pleasing fireworks of Cabernet Sauvignon. It is, however, the primary variety in Chateau Cheval Blanc, one of the Bordeaux regions most renowned wines. The vineyards at Chateau Cheval Blanc are planted with a two-thirds majority of Cabernet Franc and one-third Merlot.
