Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most popular and widely planted red grapes in the world. And depending on where it is grown and the winemaking techniques used in its production, Cabernet Sauvignon can range from the spicy and darkly fruity varietal version made famous in California's Napa Valley to the subtly flavored and finely nuanced Bordeaux, for which it is blended with Cabernet Franc and Merlot (and sometimes also with Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Carmenere).
Cabernet Sauvignon is the foundation of the many of the world's great wines, and it plays pivotal roles in the creation of both classics (like the aforementioned Bordeaux) and New World favorites. And though its most famous New World incarnation is as a California varietal wine, it is also widely blended in Australia with Shiraz to produce a wine that, with careful and thoughtful winemaking.
