California is the single most well-known wine producing state in the country. From the Cabernet Sauvignons of the Napa and Sonoma Valleys to the Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs of Carneros, to the world-renowned wines of Paso Robles, Carneros, and the Russian River Valley, there is seemingly no wine that California vintners cannot make. In fact, the land and the climate are so perfect for the growing of wine grapes that warm-weather varieties like Zinfandel and cooler-weather wines like Champagne-style sparklers are produced equally well in California.
The California style of wine is perfectly suited to the American palate, which seems to prefer fruit-forward, powerful wines that express just as much about the winemaker as they do about the land. But there are also some winemakers in California who produce wines as subtle and as beautiful as the best of Burgundy or Bordeaux. Really, there is nothing that the winemakers of California cannot do. The world of California wine could take a lifetime to explore, and its riches are seemingly endless.
