The Champagne region is northeast of Paris, and produces what is probably the single most famous wine in the world. In fact, the name Champagne has become synonymous with sparkling wine. The truth, however, is that not all sparkling wine is Champagne. Indeed, fewer than one out of 12 bottles of sparkling wine produced each year is Champagne.
There are many different kinds of Champagne, from blanc de blancs, which is made only with Chardonnay, to blanc de noirs, which is made with only with the red grapes Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The latter, despite the fact that it is made with red grapes, nonetheless looks like ordinary Champagne, if just the slightest bit darker. And rosé Champagne, unlike rosé still wine, is actually made by blending red and white wine together. Whichever style of Champagne you prefer, one thing is certain: There is nothing more festive than a bottle of Champagne. You just can't beat the real deal.
