Chardonnay Wines | Prices, Types & Reviews

Written By: Brian Freedman on Tue, Jul 11th 2006

Chardonnay is one of the most widely-planted and beloved grape varieties in the world. It thrives in a variety of climates, and the wines that are made from it run the gamut from fruity and rich, like those made most famously in Australia and California, to steely and austere, like the famous Chardonnay-based Chablis wine of France's Burgundy region. No matter where Chardonnay is grown, however, it tends to exhibit a characteristic richness that is unique and instantly recognizable

Chardonnay is used to produce one of the most famous wines in the world -Champagne. Indeed, it is typically blended with the clear juice of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier to make the beloved bubbly. Sometimes, however, a Champagne is labeled Blanc de Blanc, which means that it is made from 100% Chardonnay. In recent years, Chardonnay has become one of the most popular and in-demand grape varieties anywhere, and this is likely due to its reliably pleasing flavors, its ability to produce wines that pair well with a wide range of foods, and it generally high level of quality even at the lower end of the price spectrum
