Because of its location at the far northeastern corner of Italy, Friuli " Venezia Giulia is home to a fascinating wine culture. Indeed, the influence of neighboring countries Austria and Slovenia has made this region perhaps the least "Italian" when it comes to its wines. Pinot Grigio is produced here, which is typically Italian, but so is Riesling, Müller Thurgau, and Merlot, which are not. This does not mean, however, that these wines are not worth your time and consideration. Rather, they most certainly are: The wines of this distinctive region are interesting, unexpected, and almost always enjoyable, especially those from its most famous DOC, Colli Orientali. Exploring the wines of Friuli - Venezia Giulia is an undertaking that is both rewarding and tasty, if not terribly dramatic.
