General Etiquette

Written By: Brian Freedman on Thu, Jan 1st 1970

Because there’s so much ritual surrounding the enjoyment of wine, people tend to get pretty worked up about how to serve, sniff, sip, and discuss wine. Unfortunately, this tends to make people more nervous than they should be, and acts as a deterrent to enjoyment.

So in order to set your mind at ease, we offer a few wine-etiquette tips. Take them to heart: They really should help you enjoy your wine that much more.

1.    Don’t stick out your pinky—it just looks silly.

2.    Don’t pontificate—announcing for all the world to hear what you’re smelling or tasting—if it’s not that kind of group—is kind of cheesy.

3.    Don’t mock other people’s taste in wine—live and let live; this includes people who like peach-flavored white merlot. Remember, wine is personal, and it’s unbecoming to judge someone because their taste differs from yours.

4.    Enjoy—it’s the reason you’ve popped the cork on that bottle in the first place.
