The Gewürztraminer grape variety produces some of the most deeply colored, full-flavored, high-alcohol white wines in the world. It typically smells like roses and exotic fruits, and its abundance of flavor and richness is most appealing to lovers of big, bold wines. Indeed, they are so wonderfully exuberant that they are often paired with the spicy and boldly-flavored dishes of Thailand and India, cuisines whose foods are notoriously difficult to pair with anything but beer.
Gewürztraminer is most famously made in Alsace, and the best of them can stand the test of time in the bottle. Outside of its ancestral home, Gewurztraminer is being grown in New Zealand, Washington State, Oregon, and, to a lesser extent, in California and Australia. But for the best Gewürztraminer, stick with the Alsatian bottles. You won’t be disappointed.
