Margaret River, which is in the Western Australia region (though despite the name, the region is actually in the southwest of the country), is rather similar to Bordeaux in the variety of grapes that flourish there. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, two of the three great grapes of that most famous French wine region (the third is Cabernet Franc), flourish in Margaret River. And with white wines, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are standouts, just as they are in the white wines of Bordeaux. But as is the case with much of the New World, there is a wonderful mixing of grape varieties, and in the case of Margaret River, the unexpected twist in this most Bordeaux-like region is the Chardonnay variety, which is famous for its delicious Margaret River incarnation. The truth is this: Whatever you buy from Margaret River, you will be pleased at the very least and delighted more often than not.
