Muscat is both a grape variety and a style of dessert wine made from that variety. The dessert wine, known variously as Muscat, Moscato, and Moscatel, among others, can be produced via any number of processes, including fortifying the base wine, harvesting the grapes late so that their juices are concentrated, and the same processes employed in the production of Madeira, Sherry, and Marsala. Really, the Muscat grape variety is astoundingly versatile, so it is a good idea to taste as many different kinds of Muscat dessert wine as you can in order to discover which one you like most.
