Dessert wines were very popular in the United States around the middle of the 20th Century. Then, as the American palate developed an affinity for dry wines, dessert wines fell out of favor. But lately, they have seen a resurgence, and as a result, there is a greater selection now than there ever has been before for the connoisseur of classic sweet and dessert wines.
From Port to Eiswein to Tokay to Sauternes, the variety and quality of sweet wines is tremendous. Whatever you choose, however, it is important to taste as many different kinds of dessert wines as you can. If, for example, you are a fan of Tawny Port, then you're likely to enjoy Madeira. And connoisseurs of Trockenbeerenauslese are sure to enjoy Sauternes. The one constant, however, is that there is no better way to end a meal than with a glass of dessert wine: It's better for you than cake or ice cream, and it will settle your stomach after a big meal.
